Who Else Wants Free Food?

A few days ago an old friend came up to the homestead kitty to visit, bringing along his two teen age daughters. The girls listened, as we reminiscence of past glory and contemplated future dreams, as old friends do. Eventually the conversation turned to hunting, and the approaching fall squirrel season. The girls were in shock after finding out, for the first time, that people actually eat the fury little creatures. I could tell they were disgusted by the thought of someone partaking of such a thing.

I am amazed at the free food available and the lack of people who take advantage of it. It seems as though they think food must come from the supermarket in order to be eaten. I am afraid a lot of people are going to be brought down a peg or two, if things continue along the rocky economic road we are now on, and eating unfamiliar foods maybe necessary for survival in the not so distant future.

Anyway; I have spent most of the last two days gathering food from what I like to call nature’s free supermarket. While out wondering I came upon an old abandoned farm, the house was gone with only parts of the foundation remaining and an old rock chimney remained to stand watch over the abandoned grounds. The previous occupants had planted several fruit trees that looked like they had been pruned by someone in the fall or early winter, possibly by deer hunters hoping to attract game to the area.

I filled a large duffel bag to the top, with apples and peaches. The land wasn’t posted or at least I didn’t see any signs on the way in, so I assumed that no one would care if I took some of the harvest for my own. The day before, I had spent the day gathering blackberries that will be made into blackberry wine and canned in to jam. The point is, keep your eyes open for free food around you, and don’t feel degraded in any way because the bulk of your food comes free from nature and maybe even tried to run away to avoid being eaten.
